The Government of India has refuted reports claiming that Aadhaar cards are set to be redesigned into a simplified version featuring only a photograph and QR code, stating that no such proposal exists and describing the viral claims as misleading.
In an official clarification issued on Sunday, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology said several media reports and social media posts regarding a possible change in Aadhaar’s appearance are false and are causing unnecessary confusion among the public.
“There are intermittent news reports and social media posts claiming that Aadhaar’s format may change by the end of this year to just a photo and a QR code. This is not true. There is no such proposal under consideration,” the ministry stated.
The ministry further said that such rumours are misleading citizens and advised people to rely only on official updates shared by the Unique Identification Authority of India through its verified platforms and PIB-issued press releases.
Officials also urged media organisations to avoid spreading unverified information related to Aadhaar.
The clarification comes amid increasing circulation of online claims suggesting that Aadhaar could soon undergo a significant redesign. The government, however, reiterated that no decision regarding any modification to Aadhaar’s current format has been taken.
The statement is significant considering Aadhaar’s extensive reach and importance in India’s digital governance system. Government data shows that Aadhaar currently has around 134 crore users and has enabled more than 17,000 crore authentication transactions till date.
Operated by the Unique Identification Authority of India, Aadhaar has become one of the world’s largest biometric identification systems and plays a key role in identity verification for multiple public and private services.
