A tragic incident at Indian Institute of Information Technology Nagpur has triggered widespread anger among students after a second-year student allegedly died by suicide on campus on May 4. The incident has left the campus in shock, with students raising serious concerns over both the institute’s mental health support systems and the administration’s response.
According to students, the situation escalated further after an alleged remark by the Head of Department and hostel warden, Harsh Gaud, who reportedly told students, “Mard bano, itna kya academic pressure,” while asking them to continue preparing for exams. The comment has been widely condemned by students as insensitive and dismissive, particularly in the aftermath of a student’s death.Students have also criticized the silence of the institute’s Director, alleging that there has been no official address, visit, or acknowledgment of the tragedy. Many described the lack of communication as “deeply disappointing” and reflective of administrative apathy during a moment of collective grief.
Highlighting long-standing issues, students pointed out several infrastructural and welfare concerns on campus, including the absence of a 24×7 doctor, lack of professional mental health counsellors, inadequate first aid facilities, and no structured recreational or stress-relief avenues.
Additionally, they claim that due to insufficient hostel capacity, over 400 students are forced to stay in off-campus accommodations under poor living conditions. The incident has intensified calls for immediate institutional accountability, improved mental health support systems, and urgent reforms in campus infrastructure. Students have demanded that the administration take responsibility and initiate concrete measures to ensure student safety and well-being.
The institute administration has not yet issued an official detailed statement regarding the incident or the allegations raised by students at the time of reporting.
