The India Meteorological Department has issued a rain and thunderstorm alert for Nagpur and the Vidarbha region, raising hopes of relief from the intense heatwave conditions prevailing across Maharashtra.
According to the forecast, weather conditions are expected to change over the next two to three days, with rain, gusty winds, thunderstorms, and lightning likely in several districts of Vidarbha. The alert comes after temperatures in many parts of the state crossed 40 degrees Celsius, making daytime conditions extremely uncomfortable.
The IMD has predicted pre-monsoon rainfall activity till May 7, with light to moderate showers expected in different areas. Some places may also witness stronger thunderstorm activity accompanied by gusty winds and lightning.
Meteorologists said the sudden weather shift is being triggered by a Western Disturbance affecting central India. The system is likely to bring cloud cover, enhanced wind activity, isolated rainfall, and a gradual dip in temperatures across the region.
Officials said the expected rainfall and cloudy conditions could reduce daytime temperatures and provide significant relief from the ongoing heatwave. Forecasts also indicate a gradual fall in maximum temperatures over the next few days.
The weather department has advised residents to remain cautious during thunderstorm activity. People have been urged to avoid open spaces during lightning, stay indoors whenever possible, and take precautions against strong winds.
The upcoming spell of rain is expected to bring much-needed respite to residents of Nagpur and Vidarbha, although authorities have warned citizens to remain alert due to the possibility of thunderstorms and lightning.
