The All India State Bank of India Staff Federation (AISBISF) has announced a nationwide strike on May 25 and 26 over a list of 16 demands.
Around 950 workmen and substaff members across more than 220 State Bank of India branches in the Nagpur module are expected to participate in the protest. In a notice sent to the SBI Chairman on May 2, the federation stated that the strike would be held under the provisions of the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947.
The union has also warned that the strike may be extended to May 27 if it coincides with public holidays. Since May 23 and 24 are holidays, SBI branches could remain closed for four consecutive days. However, other public sector and private banks are expected to function normally.
AISBISF said the protest was triggered by what it described as the “systematic crushing” of workers’ rights. The federation alleged that long-standing protections secured through years of struggle are being weakened, ignored, or bypassed, while dissenting voices are being sidelined.
According to the union, repeated negotiations and representations to the management have failed to produce results, forcing employees to resort to a strike.
Among the key demands raised by the federation are fresh recruitment for messengers and armed guards, which it says are necessary for the smooth functioning of bank branches, along with several measures aimed at improving service conditions and restoring operational balance.
