Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday urged citizens to follow Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal for responsible consumption of fuel and other essential resources, amid rising global tensions and disruptions in energy supplies due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia.
Speaking in Nagpur, Fadnavis said the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran has severely impacted global oil and gas markets, leading to shortages and price increases in several neighbouring countries.
He noted that while India has so far managed to maintain stable fuel supplies, careless use and wastage could create future challenges for the country.
Global conflict impacting energy supply chains
Highlighting the international situation, Fadnavis said many countries are already facing fuel shortages and higher energy costs due to disruptions in global supply chains.
“Due to the war between America, Israel and Iran, there is a shortage of oil and gas in the world. Neighbouring countries are facing scarcity and prices have increased,” he said.
He credited the Central government for ensuring that India’s fuel supply remains largely stable despite global volatility.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi has ensured that our supply is not affected on a large scale. We are getting all the oil and gas, but if we do not understand this difficulty and do not use it properly, we too will have to face scarcity,” he added.
Fadnavis appealed to citizens to adopt mindful consumption habits in line with the Prime Minister’s message on resource conservation.
PM Modi’s push for reduced dependence on imports
Earlier in Secunderabad, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stressed the need to reduce India’s dependence on imports and promote sustainable consumption practices to strengthen economic resilience.
He pointed out that India spends significant foreign exchange on importing edible oils and fuel, adding that reducing unnecessary consumption would benefit both the economy and public health.
“The same is true for edible oil. We have to spend foreign currency on its import. If every household reduces the use of edible oil, it is a huge contribution to patriotism,” the Prime Minister said.
He described responsible consumption as a form of “modern patriotism” that can help safeguard the country’s economic interests during global instability.
Push for sustainable practices
The Prime Minister also urged farmers to gradually reduce dependence on chemical fertilisers and adopt natural farming methods to protect the environment and cut import reliance.
He further encouraged citizens to use public transport, adopt carpooling, increase rail freight usage, and shift towards electric vehicles as part of India’s long-term energy strategy.
According to him, small changes in daily habits can significantly strengthen India’s economic stability and energy security.
Rising concerns over West Asia conflict
The statements come amid growing global concerns over rising energy prices and supply disruptions linked to tensions in West Asia. The conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran has already affected shipping routes and fuel markets, particularly around the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
Experts warn that prolonged instability in the region could further push up crude oil prices and disrupt global trade and energy flows.
Against this backdrop, the Indian government continues to emphasise energy conservation, domestic production, and sustainable alternatives to reduce the impact of global volatility on the economy.
