After a week-long respite, temperatures across Vidarbha have begun rising sharply again, with Akola emerging as the hottest location in the region at 45.1 degrees Celsius on Monday.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘Yellow Alert’ for Akola, Amravati and Nagpur districts, warning of heatwave conditions on May 14 and 15. According to the IMD, maximum temperatures in all three districts are likely to stay 2.5 degrees Celsius above normal from May 14 onwards.
Amravati recorded 44 degrees Celsius on Monday, making it the second hottest place in Vidarbha. Nagpur, meanwhile, registered a maximum temperature of 42 degrees Celsius under clear skies.
The intense heat kept roads largely deserted during the day, with residents avoiding stepping outdoors. Several other districts, including Bhandara, Buldhana, Brahmapuri, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Wardha, Washim and Yavatmal, also recorded maximum temperatures crossing the 40 degrees Celsius mark.
Night temperatures too remained high across Vidarbha, staying above 24 degrees Celsius. Buldhana recorded the highest minimum temperature at 27.6 degrees Celsius on Monday.
