A disturbing picture has emerged about the mental health crisis among India’s youth, with increasing academic and career pressure pushing many students into emotional distress.According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), 14,488 students died by suicide in 2024 — averaging nearly 40 student suicides every day across the country.
The figures highlight the growing burden faced by students amid intense competition in education and career goals.State-wise, Maharashtra recorded the highest number of student suicides at 1,909 cases, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 1,585, Madhya Pradesh with 1,447, and Tamil Nadu with 1,287 cases. Together, these four states accounted for nearly 43% of all student suicides reported nationwide.
The data also shows a worrying rise over the years. While the country’s overall suicide numbers increased by 11.6% over five years — from 1,53,052 in 2020 to 1,70,746 in 2024 — student suicides rose even faster by 15.7%. The number climbed from 12,526 cases in 2020 and 13,892 in 2023 to 14,488 in 2024.As a share of total suicides, student deaths also increased from 8.2% in 2020 to 8.5% in 2024, underlining the deepening mental health concerns among young people.
