After facing years of delays due to encroachments, land acquisition disputes and local resistance, the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC) has now accelerated work on the long-pending Y-shaped Mominpura flyover, with the revised completion target set for March 2027.
According to MRIDC officials, nearly 70% of the project work has already been completed and construction is progressing steadily across multiple sections. “Foundation and substructure work is complete, while nearly 50% of the superstructure work, including girder launching, has been finished. Road concretisation work beneath the flyover has also started,” an official said.
The 2.82-km-long flyover project, originally approved at a cost of ₹146 crore, is now expected to cost nearly ₹185 crore due to delays and additional infrastructure requirements.
The flyover is expected to significantly reduce chronic traffic congestion between Kadbi Chowk and Golibar Chowk, especially near the busy Motibagh railway crossing.
The project’s bhoomipujan was conducted in July 2021, following which construction began. However, the work witnessed repeated slowdowns because of encroachments, objections raised by local residents, land disputes, tree-felling permissions and the shifting of electricity cables and water pipelines in the Mominpura area.
Officials said most of these major hurdles have now been resolved, allowing the pace of construction to increase substantially.
As per the project design, the flyover will originate from Kadbi Chowk and extend up to the Pehelwan Shah Dargah T-point. From there, one arm will head towards Mominpura, while the second arm will branch towards Santra Market and connect to the Platform No. 8 side of Nagpur railway station.
The Kadbi Chowk-to-Mominpura stretch will have an 11-metre-wide carriageway, while the Santra Market arm will feature a width of 7.5 metres.
MRIDC had initially planned to complete the project by December 2025. However, repeated disruptions pushed the deadline to the end of 2026, which has now been revised further to March 2027.
For several years, residents and commuters criticised the slow pace of work, traffic congestion and dust pollution caused by the ongoing construction. With work finally gaining momentum, many commuters are now hopeful that the flyover will provide long-awaited relief along the heavily congested Mominpura-Kadbi Chowk corridor.
