Undisciplined driving on the Nagpur-Mumbai Samruddhi Expressway is set to face stricter scrutiny with the rollout of an Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) from next month. In the first phase, the system will be operational on the Nagpur-Jalna stretch of approximately 364 kilometres. The entire 701-km expressway will be covered by August.
The project, estimated to cost Rs 1,698 crore, will see high-resolution CCTV cameras installed every kilometre along the route. A centralised control room supported by seven divisional control centres will monitor the highway round the clock, enabling real-time traffic management and immediate penalty action.
The system is designed to detect sixteen categories of traffic violations including overspeeding, wrong-way driving, mobile phone use while driving, failure to wear a seatbelt, lights off inside tunnels, fancy number plates, lane indiscipline, two-wheeler entry on the expressway, no-parking violations, and overloaded vehicles.
Emergency assistance centres have been set up every two kilometres along the route to ensure rapid response in case of accidents. Authorities expect the system to significantly reduce accidents and make travel on the expressway safer and more disciplined.
