The Vande Bharat Sleeper First AC compartment concept, developed by Kinet, has received the prestigious 2026 A’ Design Award for its outstanding contribution to mobility and transportation design. The international jury highly praised the project for its passenger-centric approach, thoughtful functionality, and refined visual identity, granting it the Bronze A’ Design Award in the 2026 edition of the competition.

This recognition reflects India’s growing presence in rolling stock design and manufacturing among the world’s leading players. Such an achievement highlights the country’s ongoing efforts to modernize railway infrastructure and strengthen domestic manufacturing capabilities. The Vande Bharat Sleeper project is helping redefine standards of mobility, passenger comfort, and travel experience across Indian Railways, while also reinforcing the export potential of Indian manufacturing on the global stage.

The award-winning First AC compartment concept was first unveiled at the International Railway Equipment Exhibition (IREE) in 2025. The design is already largely aligned with the future serial production models of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train, which are intended to bring a new level of comfort, quality, and passenger experience to railway travel across India.
Commenting on the award Chief Industrial Designer of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Project Evgeny Maslov noted:“With the Vande Bharat Sleeper project, we wanted to go beyond simply designing a comfortable train interior. Our ambition was to help shape a new image for Indian railways – modern, passenger-oriented, and emotionally connected to people. Today, public transport is part of a country’s culture, identity, and everyday experience. It influences how people see their cities and how a nation presents itself. We are proud that this vision has been recognized by the international jury.”
The First AC compartment concept was developed around a simple but essential principle: creating a space that genuinely cares for the passenger. The interior combines openness, comfort, and privacy in a calm, contemporary environment. Carefully integrated staircases ensure convenient access to upper berths, while each passenger space is equipped with personal lighting, USB charging, and compact storage elements designed for everyday travel needs. Soft colors, premium finishes, and warm metallic accents create an atmosphere that feels modern yet welcoming.
The compartment also incorporates subtle cultural references inspired by traditional Indian block-printing art, developed in collaboration with local artists. These delicate decorative elements add warmth and familiarity to the interior, while practical details – including bedside-style storage niches integrated beneath the staircase – make the environment feel intuitive and personal.
The A’ Design Award & Competition is one of the world’s largest and most influential international design competitions, celebrating outstanding achievements across hundreds of creative disciplines. In the 2026-2027 edition, the competition brought together 312 jury members, including internationally influential press representatives, established designers, leading academics, and industry professionals from around the world. Altogether, the awards cover 196 categories, 126 languages, and involve a global network of official media partners, making the recognition especially significant within the international design community.
