Two women from a Nagpur family were killed on the spot and five others sustained serious injuries after a car carrying devotees returning from pilgrimage crashed into a stationary truck on the Savangi bypass highway in Wardha district on Friday.
The deceased have been identified as Kishori Pradeep Uke (49) and Monali Nilesh Meshram (37), both residents of Nagpur. Kishori Uke was the sister-in-law of advocate Satish Uke.
According to police, the Nagpur family had travelled to Pandharpur and Akkalkot for darshan and was returning home when the accident occurred near the Savangi bypass. The driver allegedly lost control of the speeding vehicle, following which the car rammed into a truck parked on the roadside. The impact was so severe that the front portion of the vehicle was completely mangled.
The injured have been identified as driver Tushar Laxman Jadhav (37), Tanish Chandrashekhar Uke (6), Nita Anil Baraskar (55), Divyanshi Nilesh Meshram (10), Aradhya Santosh Uke (13), Ishanya Anil Baraskar (17), Sadhana Anil Baraskar (56), and Kanchan Chandrashekhar Uke (42), all residents of Nagpur.
Police said at least five of the injured are in critical condition and are undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital. Police and rescue teams rushed to the spot soon after the incident. With the help of local residents, the injured passengers were rescued from the damaged vehicle and shifted to hospital for treatment. The accident disrupted traffic movement on the highway for some time before authorities cleared the road. Police are investigating the exact cause of the crash, including the possibility of driver fatigue or overspeeding.
