A total of 26 unclaimed bodies have been reported at government hospitals in Nagpur, including Government Medical College and Hospital and Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital, during the month of May so far, with five more bodies found in the last 48 hours amid the ongoing severe heatwave conditions across the city.
As Nagpur continues to witness extreme temperatures during the ‘Navtapa’ period, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation has intensified precautionary measures to protect citizens from the impact of the scorching heat and heatwave. Under the guidance of Municipal Commissioner Dr. Vipin Itankar, the civic administration has remained on high alert and initiated multiple emergency response measures across the city.
Special “cold wards” have been set up in government hospitals for the immediate treatment of heatstroke patients, while homeless persons are being shifted to safer shelter homes. The administration has also arranged drinking water and ORS distribution at several public places to help people cope with the extreme weather conditions.
Responding to concerns over the recent unclaimed deaths, Commissioner Dr. Itankar clarified that the administration is treating the matter with seriousness and sensitivity. However, he stated that the deaths cannot yet be officially classified as heatwave-related until medical examination reports and the mandatory death audit process are completed.
He further noted that several unidentified bodies often show signs of malnutrition, chronic illnesses, or other medical complications, and therefore it would be premature to directly attribute all deaths to the heatwave without scientific confirmation. The civic administration, he added, is currently focused on ensuring timely healthcare support and preventive measures so that casualties due to extreme heat can be avoided.
