GMR Nagpur International Airport Limited (GNIAL) has floated the first major infrastructure tender for the long-awaited modernisation of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport, taking a significant step towards developing the facility into a world-class aviation hub.
The tender, titled ‘Expansion and Upgradation of the Existing Passenger Terminal Building and Redevelopment/Improvement of Airside and Landside Infrastructure’, covers expansion of the current terminal building, creation of modern passenger amenities, upgradation of runways and taxiways, as well as improvements to parking facilities, internal roads, and other critical airport infrastructure.
The entire project has been divided into four packages — Terminal Building (Civil and Structural Works), Airside Operations (Runway and Taxiway Works), Landside Development, and Electrical, HVAC, Firefighting and Security Systems. Interested companies can bid for one or multiple packages.
The tender process will be conducted in two stages — qualification and final bidding — with only shortlisted firms eligible to participate in the final round. The company has also made Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) clearance mandatory for participating bidders.
According to sources, this is the first major on-ground move for the ambitious Nagpur Airport modernisation project, which is estimated to cost over Rs 7,000 crore. Currently, the airport handles nearly 2.9 million passengers annually. The proposed expansion aims to gradually increase the airport’s capacity to handle between 20 million and 30 million passengers every year.
The Union Cabinet had granted final approval for the Nagpur Airport Upgradation Project on May 13, 2026. However, the official date for transfer of airport operations is still awaited.
