Alleged cutting and trimming of trees for the installation of a commercial hoarding at Mahesh Chowk in Nagpur’s Dharampeth area has triggered outrage among local residents and environmental activists, raising fresh concerns over the city’s “Green Nagpur” campaign and the protection of urban greenery.
According to local residents, branches of roadside trees were cut and some trees were allegedly damaged to create space for a large advertisement hoarding at the busy junction. Citizens claimed the work was carried out openly despite repeated campaigns by authorities promoting tree conservation and urban afforestation across the city.
The incident has drawn sharp criticism from locals, who questioned the administration’s commitment towards environmental protection. Residents alleged that while awareness drives and plantation campaigns are regularly organised in the name of environmental conservation, commercial interests are being allowed to override ecological concerns. They warned that unchecked destruction of trees in densely populated areas could seriously impact the city’s environmental balance.
Corporator Sunil Hiranwar also objected strongly to the alleged tree cutting and demanded immediate action against those responsible. “Such cutting of trees will not be tolerated. Strict action must be taken against the culprits without delay,” he said.
Residents are now demanding an official inquiry into the incident and are awaiting action from the civic administration over the alleged illegal cutting and damage to trees in the Dharampeth area.
