The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has officially announced Dr. Rajiv Potdar as its candidate for the Nagpur Local Authorities Constituency by-election to the Maharashtra Legislative Council.
The Nagpur seat has attracted significant political attention as it is considered one of the most prestigious Local Authorities Constituency seats in Vidarbha. The by-election was necessitated following the resignation of senior BJP leader and Maharashtra Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule from the Legislative Council.
Apart from Nagpur, the BJP has also declared candidates for two other key Vidarbha constituencies. Prominent industrialist Arun Lakhani has been nominated from the Wardha-Chandrapur-Gadchiroli Local Authorities Constituency, while Avinash Brahmankar will contest from the Bhandara-Gondia Local Authorities Constituency.
Arun Lakhani’s candidature has drawn additional interest in political circles as the Nagpur-based businessman is set to become the father-in-law of Revati Sule, daughter of NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) MP Supriya Sule. Lakhani’s son, Sarang Lakhani, is engaged to Revati Sule.
With BJP finalizing its candidates for the three major Vidarbha seats, political activity is expected to intensify ahead of the Legislative Council elections, where local body representatives will play a decisive role in electing members to the Upper House.
