Ahmedabad Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Ved Prakash imposed penalties totalling ₹2 lakh on a catering contractor and a linen supplier after a surprise inspection of the New Delhi–Sabarmati Swarna Jayanti Rajdhani Express revealed service shortcomings.
Prakash travelled on the Delhi-bound premium train and interacted with more than 100 passengers across First AC, Second AC, and Third AC coaches. The inspection focused on key passenger services, including cleanliness, housekeeping, catering, and linen quality.
During the inspection, the DRM found that fresh linen had not been provided in several Third AC coaches. Taking note of the lapse, railway authorities imposed a penalty of ₹1 lakh on the linen supplier.
Passenger complaints regarding the quality of rice served in onboard meals were also verified during the inspection. Following the findings, a separate penalty of ₹1 lakh was imposed on the catering contractor.
Railway officials said the inspection was part of ongoing efforts to improve passenger services and gather direct feedback from travellers.
During interactions with the DRM, several passengers suggested the introduction of dedicated workspaces or a separate coach for laptop users on premium trains. Senior citizens and women passengers also raised concerns related to safety and the allocation of lower berths.
Officials said passenger feedback would be reviewed to further enhance services and improve the overall travel experience.
