Passengers travelling through Nagpur may soon notice a significant change on the tracks. Indian Railways is building a 13.9-kilometre bypass route around Nagpur main railway station, which will allow long-distance trains — particularly those heading to Delhi and Howrah — to skip the congested junction entirely.
Senior railway officials recently conducted an inspection of the bypass alignment, noting that Nagpur’s main station faces chronic overcrowding and platform shortages. The bypass will reduce the burden on the station by diverting through-trains that do not need to halt at Nagpur, freeing up platform capacity for trains that genuinely serve the city.
Once operational, the bypass will directly link Nagpur main station to the Godhani-Itarsi corridor. Trains running on the Delhi route will be rerouted via Godhani, while those on the Howrah route will be rerouted through Chandrapur — a change that may require engine replacements and directional adjustments for some services.
The new bypass is also expected to allow Mail and Express trains to run at significantly higher speeds through the Nagpur area, improving overall punctuality on major trunk routes.
The entire project is targeted for completion by July 31, 2026. Railway officials have indicated that work is on track and passengers can expect faster, more efficient travel as a result.
