The Maharashtra government will introduce new textbooks and a revised curriculum under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 for students of Classes III, IV and VI from the 2026–27 academic year. Before the new curriculum is rolled out, students in these classes will have to complete a mandatory 21-day ‘Setu’ (Bridge) Course.
The bridge course has been developed by the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) to help students transition smoothly to the revised curriculum. Course material has been prepared in Marathi, English and Urdu and will be conducted immediately after schools reopen on June 15.
As part of the phased implementation of NEP 2020, Maharashtra introduced the new curriculum for Class I in the 2025–26 academic year. Since students moving to Class II have already studied under the revised framework, they will not be required to take the Setu Course. However, students entering Classes III, IV and VI will undergo the programme to familiarise themselves with the updated curriculum and strengthen their foundational learning.
According to SCERT, the Setu Course is designed to revise key concepts, introduce students to the new curriculum structure and help them achieve the learning outcomes and competencies envisioned under NEP 2020.
The programme emphasises activity-based and learner-centric teaching methods aimed at improving conceptual understanding and making classroom learning more engaging and effective.
SCERT has directed all State Board-affiliated schools, regardless of their medium of instruction or management type, to complete the Setu Course before beginning lessons from the new textbooks. Bridge course books have already been distributed to government and aided private schools across Maharashtra.
The Setu Course material is also available in PDF format on SCERT’s official website for public access.
