A six-year-old girl, whose cheerful laughter and playful presence once filled her home with joy, has given a new lease of life to a 15-year-old girl through organ donation after being declared brain-dead following a tragic accident.
Akanksha Bansod, daughter of Mahadev and Meena Bansod of Khapri, was playing at home on June 8 when her foot became entangled in a rope, causing her to fall and suffer a severe head injury. Her family immediately rushed her to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Nagpur, where doctors diagnosed her with severe intracranial haemorrhage.
Despite intensive medical efforts, Akanksha’s condition deteriorated rapidly. After conducting the required examinations, the AIIMS Brain Stem Death Committee—comprising Dr. Manish Shrigiriwar, Dr. Mahendra Chavan, Dr. Sucheta Meshram and Dr. Himali Meshram—declared her brain-dead.
Amid their immense grief, Akanksha’s parents made the courageous decision to donate their daughter’s organs. Their selfless act brought hope to others, including a 15-year-old girl who received a life-saving transplant.
While Akanksha’s untimely death left her family devastated, her organ donation ensured that her legacy would live on by giving another child a second chance at life.
