Alleged errors related to the nomenclature and faculty mentioned on Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication (BAMC) degree certificates issued by Nagpur University (NU) have remained unresolved for years, leaving several students facing difficulties while pursuing higher education.
The issue has once again come to the fore after students from the 2024 batch of Dhanwate National College (DNC) reported that institutions where they applied for further studies pointed out discrepancies in their degree certificates.
At present, the problem appears to be confined to DNC students. The college was the first to introduce the three-year BAMC course under the annual pattern in 2015. The programme has since been renamed Bachelor of Journalism (BJ), and its duration has been reduced to one year.
According to DNC officials, the university’s examination section has, since the inception of the course, printed “Degree of Bachelor of Mass Communication (BMC)” on the certificates instead of the correct nomenclature, creating complications for graduates.
They further pointed out that the BAMC programme was initially placed under the Faculty of Social Sciences and later shifted to the Faculty of Interdisciplinary Studies. However, degree certificates issued by the university mention the Faculty of Humanities, resulting in another discrepancy.
Students from the 2024 BAMC batch alleged that they continue to face problems because of these errors, despite the issue being brought to the university’s attention more than a year ago.
The students said they received their original marksheets and degree certificates only in April 2025 after waiting nearly a year. Upon noticing the incorrect faculty and course nomenclature, several students returned the documents within a couple of months for correction.
According to the students, university authorities had assured them that the necessary corrections would be carried out within a few days. However, despite repeated follow-ups, the mistakes remain unrectified.
The issue recently surfaced during a protest organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) at Samvidhan Square over the CBSE OSM controversy and the NEET paper leak. One BAMC student was seen holding a placard that read, “Meri degree pe degree ka hi naam galat hai.”
Officials from the university’s examination section, however, claimed they had not received any formal complaint regarding the matter. They stated that the corrections would be made if students approached the department.
DNC authorities maintained that they have repeatedly written to the university seeking rectification of the errors but continue to receive degree certificates carrying the wrong nomenclature and faculty details.
One of the protesting students also pointed out that while the first-year marksheet correctly mentions the Faculty of Interdisciplinary Studies, the marksheets for the second and third years incorrectly list the Faculty of Humanities, adding to the confusion surrounding the academic records.
