A 17-year-old JEE aspirant allegedly died by suicide in Nagpur’s Wathoda area, leaving behind a handwritten note in which she apologised to her mother and brother and expressed regret over not being able to meet their expectations.
The deceased, identified as Vaidehi Sunil Gulge, was a resident of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana housing complex in Wathoda.
According to police, Vaidehi’s father had passed away several years ago. Since then, her mother, Vandana Gulge, has been supporting the family through tailoring work and had been making considerable efforts to provide quality education for her two children.
Family members said Vaidehi had been facing difficulties concentrating on her studies and was struggling academically. Her mother would often encourage her to focus on her education in the hope of securing a better future.
Police said the teenager was reportedly under mental stress due to her inability to perform as expected in her studies. On Friday night, she allegedly hanged herself from a ceiling fan in the kitchen using her mother’s saree.
After being informed, Wathoda police reached the spot and launched an investigation. During the inquiry, officers recovered a handwritten note in which Vaidehi expressed guilt over not being able to fulfil her mother’s dreams despite the sacrifices she had made for her education.
In the note, she reportedly apologised to her mother and brother and stated that she felt she had failed to live up to their expectations.
Police have registered a case and are conducting further investigations into the incident.
