A disturbing incident in Nagpur’s Pachpaoli area has triggered concerns over public safety after a youth was allegedly forcefully freed from police custody and assaulted in the presence of a Beat Marshal.
Pachpaoli Police have registered a case against nine individuals under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and initiated an investigation into the incident. According to police, Beat Marshal Nitin Subhash Raut was patrolling near Taj Hotel at Ashinagar Chowk around 10.15 pm on June 20 when he came across a clash between two groups. He intervened and began questioning those involved in an attempt to defuse the situation.
During the inquiry, Tausif alias Bablu Mohit Khan, Farhan alias Bunty Khan and their associates reportedly told the officer that they were involved in a dispute with Rahul alias Golu Pradeep Gondane stemming from an earlier altercation on June 19. Raut advised both sides to maintain peace and suggested they submit their complaints at the police station.
However, as Rahul Gondane was being escorted for further questioning, the situation allegedly turned violent once again. Police said the accused pushed and obstructed Beat Marshal Raut, forcibly took Rahul out of police custody and assaulted him with wooden sticks.
The incident reportedly caused panic in the area. When Raut attempted to intervene and prevent the attack, the accused allegedly misbehaved with him, obstructed him from carrying out his official duties and threatened him with serious consequences. As the situation escalated, the Beat Marshal alerted the Police Control Room. Additional personnel from Pachpaoli Police Station rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Rahul Gondane and other injured persons were later shifted to Mayo Hospital for treatment.
Based on the complaint, police have booked Mujahid Khan alias Pintu, Arag Khan Tausif Khan, Farukh Sheikh, Farhan Firoz Khan, Aftab Khan Mujid Khan, Rahul Gondane, Abdul Anis alias Abdul Shafiq and others on charges including assault, criminal intimidation, unlawful obstruction of a public servant and other related offences.
The incident has drawn attention due to the allegation that a person was forcibly taken from police custody and attacked in a busy locality despite the presence of a police officer. Residents expressed concern over the brazenness of the act and said the situation could have become far more serious had additional police personnel not arrived in time.
Further investigation is underway.
