After a prolonged dry spell, Nagpur and several parts of Vidarbha received pre-monsoon showers on Monday evening, bringing much-needed relief from the intense heat that had persisted over the past few weeks.
Weather conditions changed dramatically in Nagpur during the evening as dark clouds gathered, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and strong gusty winds. Rainfall began around 6.15 pm and continued for nearly an hour.
The city recorded light to moderate rainfall, with 24 mm of rain measured till 8.30 pm.According to Dr. Praveen Kumar, scientist at the Regional Meteorological Centre in Nagpur, the rainfall was triggered by the formation of a trough over Vidarbha. He said the southwest monsoon has already advanced up to Pune and Alibag, and conditions remain favourable for its further progress into interior parts of Maharashtra.
The monsoon is expected to reach parts of Vidarbha within the next three to four days.Several other districts, including Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Gondia and Bhandara, also witnessed rainfall. Chandrapur received heavy showers, which led to uprooting of trees at multiple locations. In a separate incident, an ox was killed after being struck by lightning in Nagbhid tehsil.
Meteorological officials said there is currently no weather system developing over the Bay of Bengal. However, the ongoing advancement of the monsoon into Maharashtra is being driven by conditions over the Arabian Sea.
