In a significant step towards strengthening wildlife conservation efforts, particularly for Vidarbha’s tiger population and other wild species, the Maharashtra Animal and Fishery Sciences University (MAFSU) has launched a first-of-its-kind academic programme aimed at developing specialised veterinary expertise in wildlife healthcare.
Starting from the 2026-27 academic session, MAFSU will introduce a new postgraduate course in Wildlife Health Management under its Master of Veterinary Science (M.V.Sc.) programme. The initiative is designed to train veterinarians in diagnosing and treating wild animals affected by diseases, injuries, territorial conflicts and accidents, ensuring timely and scientific medical intervention.
For the first time in Maharashtra, the course will be offered at the Wildlife Research and Training Centre (WRTC) in Gorewada, Nagpur. Initially, the programme will admit four students.
Admissions have already been conducted through an entrance examination organised by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi. Until now, similar specialised courses were available only at institutions in Jabalpur and Tamil Nadu, making Nagpur the latest centre for advanced wildlife veterinary education in the country.
