Smart meters were introduced with the promise of improving billing accuracy and transparency, but for many consumers in Nagpur, they have become a source of growing concern. Residents across several localities have reported a sharp increase in electricity bills following the installation of smart meters, with many claiming their monthly charges have risen significantly compared to earlier billing cycles.
Consumers allege that despite repeatedly approaching the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) for clarification, they have received little response or resolution. According to residents, complaints have been registered, but the issues remain unresolved.
One such case has emerged from Rachana Sayantara Phase-1 at Hazari Pahad, a residential complex comprising 174 flats across four wings. Many residents of the society had invested in rooftop solar systems, which had helped reduce their electricity expenses and offered steady savings over time.
However, residents claim that those savings vanished soon after smart meters were installed. While the solar panels continue to generate electricity, several homeowners allege that the benefits of solar power are no longer being reflected accurately in their bills. As a result, electricity charges that were once manageable have reportedly surged without any clear explanation.
Residents say the increase was sudden rather than gradual, leaving many puzzled about the functioning of the new metering system. They suspect that the interface between the rooftop solar installations and smart meters may not be recording or crediting power generation correctly.
According to residents, multiple complaints have been submitted to MSEDCL seeking verification of meter readings and an examination of the solar-meter integration. While the complaints have been acknowledged, they claim no technical inspection has been carried out so far and no detailed explanation has been provided regarding the sudden rise in bills.
The issue has sparked concern among consumers who fear that the very technology intended to improve transparency may be creating fresh challenges for households that had invested in renewable energy solutions to reduce their electricity costs.
