The Legal Metrology Department has urged consumers to verify fuel dispenser readings before purchasing petrol or diesel and not rely on rumours regarding fuel dispensing at petrol pumps.
In a press release, Deputy Controller VB Zhote said all fuel dispensing units are verified and stamped once every two years under the Maharashtra Legal Metrology (Enforcement) Rules, 2011. The verification is carried out in accordance with prescribed technical standards and permissible error limits to ensure accurate fuel delivery.
Zhote said the calibration process is conducted in the presence of Legal Metrology inspectors, oil company sales officials and engineers from the original equipment manufacturer (OEM). Fuel dispensers are sealed only after their accuracy is confirmed within the permissible tolerance limit of approximately 25 ml for every five litres dispensed.
The department has advised consumers to ensure that the fuel dispenser displays zero before refuelling and to verify the quantity while purchasing engine oil along with fuel.
Consumers have also been urged to report any complaints related to fuel dispensing to the Legal Metrology Department through its Mumbai or Nagpur offices.
