A motorcyclist was killed after the rear wheel of a moving school bus detached and struck him near Kondhali in Nagpur district on Sunday evening.
The accident occurred near Khapri on the Kondhali–Sawli Khurd road. According to police, Namdev Mahadev Ghagare, a resident of Sawli Khurd, was returning home on his motorcycle (MH-32/AV-9256) from Kondhali when the mishap took place.
Police said a school bus (MH-35/AJ-0446) travelling behind Ghagare suffered a mechanical failure, causing its left rear wheel to come off while the vehicle was in motion. The detached wheel rolled forward at high speed and collided with the motorcycle, throwing the rider onto the road. The wheel then reportedly ran over his head, killing him on the spot. Local residents and passersby rushed to the spot after the accident, but Ghagare had succumbed to his injuries before help could arrive.
On receiving information, Kondhali police reached the scene, conducted a panchnama and sent the body for post-mortem examination. An accidental death has been registered, and an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the mechanical failure and whether negligence was involved. Ghagare is survived by his wife and two daughters. Family members said he was the sole earning member of the household.
The incident has sparked concern among local residents, who alleged that inadequate vehicle maintenance may have led to the accident. They have demanded a detailed inquiry into the bus’s fitness certificate, maintenance records and technical inspections, besides strict action against those found responsible.
The accident has also renewed concerns over the safety of school buses. Residents and parents have urged transport authorities to conduct special inspections of school buses, strengthen enforcement of vehicle fitness norms and ensure periodic safety audits to prevent similar incidents.
