Need to change perception of people about I-T dept: Asha Agarwal

“Uttarayan-2019”, an orientation programme for the newly promoted ACsIT was inaugurated at the hands of Asha Agarwal, Principal Director General (Training) at the National Academy of Direct Taxes (NADT) on Friday. Seniors officers from the field and faculty members of NADT were present on the occasion.

Asha Agarwal in her inaugural address, congratulated the officer trainees on their promotion to the post of Assistant Commissioner.  The Principal DG also emphasized that the officer of the Department are the face of the Department. How they interact and deal with the taxpayer is how the Department is seen by the common man. Hence, perception of people about the Department needs to be changed through fairness, promptness and transparency in dealings and interactions with the taxpayers.

She emphasized that training inputs will not only cover technical and legal issues but will also include areas in respect of soft skills including stress and work management, ethics, and integrity to ensure holistic development.

She reminded the officers of the need to become proficient in using technology to reach the taxpayers and enhance voluntary compliance while efficiently implementing the tax laws.

As many as 169 newly promoted Assistant Commissioners of Income Tax are undergoing orientation training of eight weeks at NADT before being posted to field formations to serve the country as tax administrators. The orientation batch comprises of 16 lady officers. It represents 21 states and a Union territory. The largest contingent of trainees is from Tamil Nadu followed by Bihar, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. The batch comprises 95 graduates, 51 post-graduates, 4 engineers, 13 law graduates and 6 MBAs. The average work experience of the batch is 25 years.

The eight week-long orientation programme includes classroom sessions, on the job training, study tours as also international attachment to provide exposure to the trainees on international best practices. The course content has been specifically designed to focus on training in upcoming areas of tax administration such as digital forensics, data analysis and advanced accounting software. In addition, inputs on soft skills, gender sensitization, international taxation and transfer pricing etc. will also be imparted.

The function concluded with formal vote of thanks and National Anthem.
