Complicated Brain surgery of 4 month old baby performed in Wockhardt Hospital, Nagpur

Achieving yet another landmark in high end healthcare, a complicated brain surgery was performed on a four month old baby in Wockhardt Hospital Nagpur. The baby, hailing from a small town-Umaria, in Madhya Pradesh had a tumor in his brain which needed to be operated and removed. The child also had fluid built up in his brain leading to a bulging in fontanel (soft part in children’s skull). It was necessary to extract that as well.

This highly complicated surgery was performed by Dr. Akshay Patil, Consultant, Neuro Surgeon along with an expert team of Anesthetist Dr. Awantika Jaiswal and other staff members. “The child came to us in a very complicated state having a tumor in his brain which was very difficult to operate but at the same time very important and remove from the body”, said Dr. Akshay Patil. The post operative care to the baby was provided by Dr. Sandeep Yadav, Pediatrician and the child was shifted to his hospital for further management.

Another challenge for the medical team was to get an MRI done before the surgery which is very difficult to perform on kids-especially on a four month old baby is even more difficult. The MRI was attempted four times but every time the child woke up. Thus, it had to be performed under sedation. Also, there were two simultaneous surgeries which needed to be performed- one for the hydrocephalus (a build-up of fluid in brain cavities) and the other one for the tumor. Both the surgeries needed five to six hours each and it was risky to keep the kid under sedation for such a long duration. Thus, it was decided that the surgery will be done in two phases. After performing COVID test and other necessary investigations, the child was taken for surgeries. Both the surgeries were conduced efficiently and were successful.

“It was in such a complex condition that most of the hospitals had given up hope and declined to treat him in absence of facilities. However, Wockhardt hospitals accepted the case and treated him in a very efficient manner. Even the entire team of doctors came at odd hours and explained each and everything to us with complete detail”, said the child’s father. “Not just that, we were also given huge moral support by the entire Wockhardt team in such a difficult time. I have no relatives in town but the way my child was taken care of in Wockhardt Hospital, I did not even feel that I needed someone. The team took care of him like he was their own child”, he added.

“We feel pride and happy for our contribution in saving a valuable life. The family was provided a benefit of Madhya Pradesh State Government Fund as the treatment for these surgeries was quite expensive. The case was very complicated and most of the hospitals in the region had denied treating the child due to lack of proper facilities. But as Wockhardt is known for its high end care and treatment, we accepted the case”, said Mrs. K. Sujatha, Centre Head, Wockhardt Hospital Nagpur.

Wockhardt hospitals are a recognized name in the city.
