Comatose Wardha Villager with serious head injuries recovers at OCHRI and goes back home walking

Recently one 25-year-old male, from Palloti Village, Wardha was referred to Nagpur based Orange City Hospital & Research Institute, a unit of Ravi Nair Hospitals Private Limited in very critical condition. He had alleged history of Road Traffic Accident at village.

He was taken to nearby hospital, where he was intubated in view of severe head injury and unconscious state. After First aid treatment he was referred to OCHRI for further specialized treatment. He was admitted under care of Dr. Shailendra Anjankar- Neurosurgeon.

At OCHRI; he was found to be deeply comatose with GCS 5/15, pupils bilateral dilated; not reacting to light with CSF coming from nose. His CT scan Brain suggested Large Left Frontal EDH, Base of skull fractures and brain parenchyma coming out from scalp wound. He was put on ventilator support with tracheostomy. Dr. Anjankar explained in details about the further treatment and need of urgent surgery, prognosis and outcome to relatives. Dr. Abhay Agashe- Ophthalmologist also explained to his relatives about the guarded prognosis for vision due to left optic nerve trauma. Relatives having full faith on OCHRI TEAM consented for surgery.

In view of Covid-19 pandemic and urgent need of surgical intervention, rather than waiting for Covid-19 RTPC test, he was taken for emergency surgical management in night itself with pre-operative Rapid Antigen test for Covid. Bi-frontal Craniectomy, evacuation of extra Dural hematomas and skull base repair was done by Dr. Shailendra Anjankar while Dr. Smita Harkare provided the necessary anesthesia.   Post operatively, ventilator was gradually weaned of and tracheostomy was removed. He also improved neurologically and Right eye pupil started reacting to light with good improvement in vision of Left eye.

Dr. Shailendra Anjankar informed that “CSF rhinorrhea causes meningitis which leads to death. But intricate pre & post-operative management by round the clock stationed OCHRI Critical Care Specialists led by Dr. Rajesh Atal, Senior Critical Care Physician helped to wean him out without any complications.”

He was discharged walking from hospital with normal powers in all limb with significant improvement in Left eye vision, No CSF leakage and no signs of meningitis. Relatives thanked TEAM OCHRI led by Dr. Shailendra Anjankar for the care and concern.

Dr. Anup Marar- OCHRI Director conveyed the compliments of Shri.Udaybhaskar Nair- RNHPL Chairman to Dr. Shailendra Anjankar and TEAM OCHRI and stated that, “It attests the surgical acumen of OCHRI Neurosurgery division and care delivery in CCU. Needy central Indians with varied brain and spine trauma reach OCHRI to seek solace in view of 25 years’ goodwill, experienced multi-super speciality team, round the clock comprehensive diagnostic, surgical, critical care set up, state of the art operation theatre equipped with high end Neurosurgery microscopes, modern anesthesia machines and rehabilitation facilities available under one roof.

Dr. Rajesh Atal- Critical Care Physician supervised pre & post-operative management.  Dr. Abhay Agashe- Ophthalmologist, Dr. Ninad Gawande- Medico Legal Consultant and full time round the clock team of Critical Care Specialists Dr. Akshay Burlawar, Dr. Roshan Jawlekar, Dr. Shital Chavan and Dr. Mohit Gharpure provided necessary support. Dr. Milind Pande- Pathologist, Dr. Nishikant Lokhande – Radiologists and their team of Specialists rendered diagnostic support. Smt.Nisha Ashok and Sr. Preethy Joseph led nursing & paramedical team in Operation theatre and ICU while Dr. Atul Dekate led the team of Physiotherapists.
