Uncertain climate spoiling mango season this year: City fruit vendors

Mango the king of fruit has reached the city markets in just one month. “But the uncertain climate, is spoiling the season of mangos”, said many fruit vendors of city. The summer special mango, at present is available varieties like Alphonso,  Baiganfali and Lalbagh. The other varieties like the Langda, Totafalli, Kesar will also be arriving after Holi, said fruit vendors. “The rainy season in between like the last three days and similarly two days in the last week has given us beating, and we are little scared in placing orders to the suppliers,” said Munna Shahu of Shri Balaji Fruit and Juice Centre, Mehadia Square.

He added that the king of Mango i.e. Alphonso (Hapus) has reached city at the beginning of Feburary. It is being supplied to city from Ratnagiri, Devgad and South. The price at the local market is quoted between Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,200 per dozen. “The rates may come down and the supply of mangos will increase after Holi,” Shahu said.

The most popular variety Baiganfalli, at present being supplied from South particularly from Madras and Kerala and is quoted at a price tag between Rs 160 and Rs 200 per kg. The local and supply from other parts may start after 45 days and the rates may even come down, Shahu predicted. The Lalbagh variety available in city is also coming from Madras and Kerala and is priced between Rs 200 to Rs 300 per kg. “There is no bad impact of lockdown on the sale of mango’s and the demand is increasing day by day,” Shahu summed.
