DCGI gives approval to vaccine trials for kids in 2-18 years age group

As the Covid-19 continues to haunt us and it is feared that the children would be the most affected group in third wave. In this situation, vaccination seems to be the only resort to prevent this, The Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) on Wednesday approved the vaccine trials for the age group of 2-18 years at AIIMS Delhi, AIIMS Patna and AIIMS Nagpur. As per information, in Nagpur the trials will be conducted by city’s senior pediatrician Dr.Vasant Khadatkar. It has come to light that children up to the age of 19 years have been getting infected with Covid virus.

In January, 903 children from Nagpur district were infected, while 1,741 were infected in February. Similarly, 6966 children in March and 20, 816 in April were infected with Covid-19 taking the total number to 30, 420. Meanwhile, Bharat Biotech was making efforts to conduct trials of vaccines for 2-18 years age group. Dr. Khadatkar from the city had taken the initiative for trials of children vaccine. Eventually, the DGCI gave nod for it on Tuesday. The first phase of trials of Covaxin for above 18 years had started at Gillurkar Multi Speciality Hospital of the city. Around 1500 participants took part in the second phase of trials at a private hospital. Besides this, the third-phase trial of Covishield was conducted successfully at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).
