RTMNU to honour its alumus Arvind Bobde, who became CJI

Former Chief Justice of India Arvind Bobde will be honoured by Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University by conferring honorary LLD degree upon him. The Special Convocation will be held at the University’s Convocation Hall, at 11 am on July 9. Retired Supreme Court Judge Vikas Sirpurkar will deliver the Convocation address. Chancellor and Governor Bhagatsingh Koshyari will attend the Convocation on-line. Vice-Chancellor Dr Subhash Chaudhari, Pro-VC Dr Sanjay Dudhe, Registrar Dr Raju Hiwase, Director of Examination and Evaluation Prof Prafulla Sable and other university authorities will attend.

Justice Bobde is an alumnus of this university. He was a student of The University Dr Ambedkar College of Law. He was also a practicing lawyer at Nagpur Bench of Bombay High Court here.

On becoming the Chief Justice of India, a proposal to confer the highest degree upon him was moved. The proposal was unanimously accepted by the Management Council of the University. The Convocation for conferring the degree, however, got prolonged, initially when the dates were not suited to Justice Bobde and later due to Covid 19 pandemic. The Convocation could not be held during the tenure of Dr S P Kane. The present VC Dr Chaudhari scheduled the programme, along with the regular Convocation of the University. It will be held from July 9 to July 12. After conferring LLD upon Justice Bobde, two D Litt degrees will be conferred upon Dr Ratnakar Bhelkar and Dr T V Gedam, This will be followed by award of medals and prizes to meritorious students on July 12.

Prachi Agrawal is the winner of highest medals and prizes. A student of Dr Ambedkar College of Law, she has bagged nine Gold medals and two prizes.

In all 77,912 degrees will be awarded during the Convocation, which is 108th in the history of the University. Another important feature is that it is being held in its Convocation Hall, after 50 years. The University will confer 867 doctoral degrees (PhD) upon the researchers, which is also highest so far being awarded by the University. In order to avoid crowding the convocation is being held in phased manner till July 16.

The Convocation can be viewed on Cisco Webex link, Facebook and Youtube.
