“Aiming to be rich shows poverty of ambition”: Dr KV Subramanian (Chief Economic Advisor, GoI) at IIM Nagpur

IIM Nagpur welcomed Dr Krishnamurthy Subramanian (Chief Economic Advisor to the Government of
India) for the inaugural address at the launch of the Economics and Public Policy Special Interest Group
on August 2, 2021. Dr Bhimaraya Metri (Director, IIM Nagpur) welcomed the eminent economist and
shared a brief introduction about the Institute and its various activities.

In an engaging conversation with the students, Dr Subramanian exhorted students to remain true to
their ideals, as acceptance of the status quo in the name of practicality acts as a hurdle to evolution
and progress. He also advised the students to inculcate rigorous thinking – questioning the origins of
knowledge itself. Dr Subramanian reminded them that the pursuit of wealth is a misplaced goal, and
that they should use their privilege to create value for the society at large.

Prof Ankita Dash (Faculty, IIM Nagpur) moderated a Q&A session following Dr Subramanian’s address.
In this session, Dr Subramanian answered students’ questions about a range of issues such as ethical
wealth creation, impact of crises such as the pandemic to India’s vision of becoming a 5-trillion dollar
economy, and organizational restructuring to make the public sector more efficient
