Earth Hour today: its timing in India, history, and significance

Every year on the last Saturday of March, millions of people around the world participate in Earth Hour to raise awareness about climate change and energy conservation.

Millions of people participate in the global event ‘Earth Hour,’ turning off all lights and electric appliances in their homes and offices for one hour. The event calls for people to turn off their lights and spend 60 minutes doing something good for the environment.

Earth Hour will be held today (March 25) from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. local time. The event is organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) to mobilise the masses to ‘Give an Hour for Earth’ and show support and solidarity for climate change and energy conservation.

On March 31, 2007, at 7:30 p.m., the WWF Sydney introduced the ‘Earth Hour’ event as a symbolic lights-out event. The event’s popularity has grown since then, and it is now held every year on the last Saturday of March.

Hundreds of celebrities and influencers have come out in support of the noble awareness campaign.

Sudarsan Pattnaik, a renowned sand artist and Padma Shri awardee, also lent his support as the Goodwill Ambassador for Earth Hour India 2023 by dedicating his sand art installation. Pattnaik used his sand art to encourage his followers to participate in the Earth Hour by turning off all non-essential lights on March 25th from 8:30pm to 9:30pm.

Similarly, the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres spread awareness on Twitter and wrote, “Earth Hour is a call to massively increase climate action and a reminder that all of us can play our part. I invite you to switch off your lights for an hour on March 25 at 8:30pm local time – wherever you are. Every minute and every hour counts.”
