In a tragic turn of events, Pooja Rajani, a 22-year-old second-year MBBS student from Nagpur, took her own life by jumping from the third floor of Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Sawangi Meghe, around 3 pm on Thursday. Reports indicate that she had been experiencing significant stress in recent days.
Reports indicate that a 75 percent attendance rate is mandatory to qualify for the exams. However, Pooja Rajani’s attendance did not meet this threshold, and the college principal had informed her that she would be barred from taking the exam. Overwhelmed by this situation, Pooja jumped from the third floor, directly across from the principal’s office, resulting in her death. Despite swift medical attention and transport to the emergency ward, she sadly passed away during treatment.
Upon receiving the report, staff from the Sawangi police station and senior officials promptly arrived at the hospital. To ensure safety and prevent any further incidents, a significant number of police officers were stationed at the hospital premises.
Following the incident, a large crowd gathered at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College.
“Pooja’s fear of missing the exam drove her to take this drastic action.”
The principal had informed Pooja that she would be barred from the examination due to her attendance issues. Despite her request to be allowed to sit for the exam, he reportedly demanded a payment of 3 lakh rupees. Overwhelmed by the fear of missing the exam, Pooja took the drastic step of ending her life. The victim’s mother and uncle have accused the college management of being responsible for Pooja’s suicide.
“Pooja had been under considerable mental stress in the days leading up to the incident, which prompted her to jump from the terrace. Although no one saw her jump, the sound alerted doctors and students, who immediately rushed her to the emergency ward. Sadly, she died while receiving treatment,” said Abhyuday Meghe, OSD of Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College.
