The ongoing dispute between the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) and the hawkers in Sitabuldi shows no signs of resolution. For the second day in a row, hawkers have chosen not to set up their stalls and are instead holding a silent protest on the busy street. Meanwhile, the NMC’s anti-encroachment department is on standby, ready to take action against any unauthorized vendors.
Hawkers are staging a protest against the NMC’s actions targeting unlicensed vendors, a move that followed criticism from Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. During the demonstration, protesters displayed placards calling for the enforcement of the Town Vending Committee’s decisions and highlighting the lack of attention from politicians regarding their concerns. Some signs even urged the high court to intervene in the matter.
Abdul Razzaque Qureshi, the leader of the hawkers’ union, announced a major protest at Samvidhan Square on Thursday, where they plan to meet with the municipal commissioner to discuss their concerns. He highlighted that many unemployed individuals depend on street vending to support their families and deserve to live with dignity. Qureshi expressed disappointment that, after 35 years of struggle, local politicians have not addressed their issues.
