A family’s return journey from a wedding ended in tragedy when their car met with a horrific accident on the Samruddhi Expressway near Hingna on Monday, January 20. The accident claimed the life of a 67-year-old woman and left five others injured.
The incident occurred around 11:00 am near the Vena River Bridge. The victims were traveling in a Maruti Ciaz (registration number MH 37 V 4333) after attending a wedding in Nagpur and were headed back to Murtijapur. The vehicle was driven by Rohit Lahoti (36), a resident of Chandak Layout, Washim, and included his mother Asha Lahoti (67), wife Tilak Lahoti (32), brother Roshan Lahoti (35), and relatives Dinesh Malani (38) and Sunita Malani (33).
According to police, Rohit was driving at high speed when he lost control of the vehicle, causing it to crash into a road divider near the Vena River Bridge. The impact left the car mangled and its occupants severely injured.
Eyewitnesses alerted Hingna Police, who rushed to the scene and transported the victims to AIIMS Nagpur. Doctors declared Asha Lahoti dead on arrival, while the other passengers are undergoing treatment.
A relative, Vitthal Rathi, who was traveling in a separate vehicle, filed a complaint regarding the incident. Hingna Police have registered a case against the driver, Rohit Lahoti, under Sections 106(1), 281, and 125(b) of the BNS, along with relevant provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.
The accident highlights the perils of overspeeding on the Samruddhi Expressway, which has been a site of multiple accidents. Authorities are urging motorists to exercise caution and follow speed limits.
