The Department of Sports Dentistry, an initiative of the Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry division at Government Dental College & Hospital, Nagpur, achieved a historic milestone with the launch of India’s first Fellowship in Sports Dentistry, approved by MUHS Nashik. The event, held in the college auditorium, witnessed enthusiastic participation from faculty members, students, and distinguished dignitaries from the fields of dentistry and sports sciences.
The symposium commenced at 9:30 AM with an opening address, emphasizing the growing need for sports dentistry in ensuring athletes’ oral health and safety. The event focused on the prevention and management of orofacial injuries and the integration of dental expertise into sports medicine. Chief Guest Dr. Vivek Pakhmode, Joint Director, Dental, DMER Maharashtra, attended the program via video conferencing. Guest of Honor Dr. Prashant Khote, Principal of Dhanwate National College, Nagpur, graced the occasion. The event was also attended by Dr. Abhay N. Datarkar (Dean & Professor), Dr. Mangesh Phadnaik (Vice Dean & Professor – Administration), Dr. Manjusha Warhadpande (Vice Dean & Professor – Academics), Dr. Ritesh Kalaskar (HOD & Professor), and Dr. Surendrakumar Bahetwar (Assistant Professor). Chairpersons Dr. Ashita Kalaskar and Dr. Darshan Dakshindas, along with MSDC (Maharashtra State Dental Council) observer Dr. Devendra Nagpal, were also present.

A key moment was the lamp-lighting ceremony, where dignitaries paid tribute to legendary sportsperson Major Dhyan Chand, symbolizing dedication and excellence in sports.
The symposium featured insightful lectures from renowned experts, covering critical aspects of sports dentistry: Dr. Resham Pakhmode spoke on Winning Smiles for Champions: Establishing Sports Dentistry in Every Dental College, Dr. Devendra Wankhade discussed Winning Smile: Need for Sports Dentistry in Sports Academies & Clubs, Dr. Ritesh Kalaskar highlighted Mouthguards: The Unsung Heroes of Sports Safety, and Dr. Surendrakumar Bahetwar presented on Sports Dentistry: Curriculum. These sessions provided valuable insights into the role of sports dentistry in preventing dental trauma and promoting athlete safety.
A landmark moment of the event was the official unveiling of the Fellowship in Sports Dentistry under the Department of Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry. The program aims to equip dental professionals with specialized training in managing sports-related dental injuries, fabricating custom mouthguards, and collaborating with sports medicine experts.
A live video demonstration on the fabrication and placement of mouthguards provided participants with hands-on exposure to protective dental gear, reinforcing the critical role of sports dentistry in injury prevention.
Dr. Vivek Pakhmode, in his virtual address, highlighted the increasing incidence of orofacial injuries in sports and the urgent need for preventive measures. Dr. Prashant Khote emphasized the role of diet in oral health and its impact on athletic performance. Dean Dr. Abhay Datarkar commended the initiative, underlining its significance in shaping the future of sports dentistry in India and praised the organizing team for their efforts in successfully executing the event. Organizing Secretary Dr. Ritesh Kalaskar spoke about the expanding career opportunities in sports dentistry, particularly within sports organizations, where timely oral care interventions can enhance athletes’ performance.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Surendrakumar Bahetwar, who expressed gratitude to all dignitaries, speakers, faculty members, and students for their contributions in making the symposium a resounding success.
