The Outer Ring Road, initiated in 2016 and initially slated for completion in 2019, has now entered its final phase. Expected to open for traffic by the first week of April 2025, the 64-km road has been built at a cost of ₹2,000 crore. Once operational, it will help decongest Nagpur by allowing vehicles from outside the city to bypass urban areas, ensuring smoother traffic flow.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) took up the project to divert heavy vehicles from city roads, aiming to ease congestion and enhance connectivity within Nagpur. While most of the 64-km road is complete, a small section remains under construction.
Experts say the remaining work will be finished within a month, and the Outer Ring Road will be ready for use by the first week of April. The road starts from Jamtha on Wardha Road and passes through important locations like the Samruddhi Expressway junction, Katol Road, Koradi, and Fetri.
The Nagpur-Jabalpur Highway ends at the Nagpur bypass near Kapsi, with the Outer Ring Road’s second phase connecting Fetri to Kapsi. This route will provide a direct connection for trucks from Hyderabad to Jabalpur, while travelers from Betul can reach Bhandara and continue to Kolkata. The road also links Amravati Road and provides access to Bhandara Road.
Nagpur already has an Inner Ring Road built by the PWD, but rising traffic demands led NHAI to develop the larger Outer Ring Road. The new road will also allow vehicles from Hingna to connect directly to the Samruddhi Mahamarg.
The 64-km Outer Ring Road will bring much-needed relief, allowing travelers to take convenient routes outside the city.
Currently, Nagpur is experiencing heavy construction work across various areas, leading to increased traffic congestion. The situation is worsened by heavy vehicles moving through crowded roads and using bridges not designed for them, adding to the chaos for commuters.
