Nagpur Municipal Commissioner (NMC) Dr. Abhijit Chaudhari conducted a crucial inspection at the Mankapur Divisional Sports Complex on March 3, assessing the impact of the Nagpur Sports Hub construction on the surrounding greenery. With 365 trees—58 classified as heritage and 307 as non-heritage—the project has raised concerns over environmental conservation.
During the inspection, Dr. Chaudhari directed officials to preserve as many trees as possible, especially those obstructing internal roads, the sports school, and the gymnasium building. He specifically recommended altering the placement of the swimming pool and tennis courts to minimize tree-cutting. Additionally, a revised plan marking all protected trees was ordered.
Accompanied by Additional Commissioner Anchal Goyal, Deputy Commissioner (Garden Department) Ganesh Rathod, and PWD engineers, Dr. Chaudhari sought clarity on obtaining state environmental department approvals for tree removal. He emphasized the need for compensatory plantation, with PWD officials confirming the planting of 8,700 new trees across the city.
With rising concerns over deforestation in urban projects, the Nagpur Sports Hub stands at a crossroads—will it strike a balance between development and ecological responsibility, or will it fall prey to reckless urbanization?
