Cancer is one of the major pandemics in the world. The statistics of cancer in India and especially women are difficult to accept. Studies say that every 8 minutes one women dies of cervical cancer in India and one of every 2 women
Women associated cancers include breast cancer, cervix cancer, ovary cancer and uterus cancer. The most common cancers in women in India are Breast cancer, cervical cancer and oral cancers.

Breast cancer accounts for 27% of all cancers in women. Most common signs of breast cancer include lump in breast or armpit, even if painless, discharge from nipple, change in shape or size of breast or any change in the skin overlying the breast. Self-examination of the breast is the best way to feel the breast for lumps or other abnormalities and it is recommended for all women over the age of 20 years once every month. Clinical examination by a doctor is recommended once every 6 months. Mammography is advised once in a year for women above the age of 40 years for early detection.
Cervical cancer is another common cancer in India in women. Although HPV (human papillomavirus) is the most common cause of cervical cancer, there are other factors that increase the risk of mortality like genital infection, smoking etc. Common symptoms include abnormal vaginal bleeding or any other discharge, pain in abdomen or pelvic area, painful intercourse. Regular examination and Pap smear are effective methods of screening and early detection. The availability of effective vaccine for cervical cancer prevention is one of the major breakthroughs in preventing cervical cancer mortality. Cervical cancer is now a preventable cancer with the HPV vaccination.
