Nagpur Police have partially relaxed the curfew in select areas while maintaining restrictions in sensitive zones. The curfew, imposed on March 18, 2025, at 12:01 AM under Sections 163(1), (2), and (3) of the Bhartiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, followed communal unrest in the city.
On March 17, 2025, at 11:30 AM, members of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal gathered near the Shivaji Maharaj statue in Mahal, protesting against Aurangzeb’s tomb. Around 200-250 activists participated, burning a symbolic tomb wrapped in green cloth.
Later, at 7:30 PM in Bhaldarpura (Ganeshpeth limits), a large group allegedly pelted stones at police, disrupting law and order. The unrest posed a threat to public safety, leading to the imposition of a curfew.
Curfew Relaxations:
Police Commissioner Dr. Ravinder Kumar Singal has now lifted the curfew completely in Nandanvan and Kapil Nagar. Additionally, in Lakadganj, Pachpaoli, Shantinagar, Sakkardara, Imamwada, and Yashodharanagar, movement is allowed from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM for essentials, after which restrictions will resume.
However, curfew remains in Kotwali, Tehsil, and Ganeshpeth until further orders. Violators will face legal action under Section 223 of the BNS, 2023.
Police have urged citizens to cooperate and maintain peace while security forces monitor the situation.
