Internationally acclaimed sculptor Ram Sutar will be honoured with the ‘Maharashtra Bhushan’ Award, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced on Thursday. Sutar, who created Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s statue the ‘Statue of Liberty’ installed near Sardar Sarovar, and about 350 different statues installed in India, Russia, Malaysia, England, and other countries, is 100 years of age.
Ram Sutar was also nominated to make the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj to be installed in the Arabian Sea in Mumbai. Sutar first made a statue f a bodybuilder in 1947 and then Mahatma Gandhi’s statue for his school in 1948. His Joshi Sir advised him to take training at J J School of Arts in Mumbai and also arranged for his stay and food. Ram Sutar won a gold medal at J J School of Arts.
Sutar made a statue of Chambal’s Goddess, which was liked by the then Prime Minister Pt Jawaharlal Nehru. Pt Nehru assigned him the work of making a bronze sculpture to be installed at Bhagra Nangal Dam. The project, however, could not be completed for various reasons. He made 16 statues installed at important places, including those of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Mahatma Gandhi, Indira Gandhi, Vallabhbhai Patel, Bhagat Singh, Mahatma Phule installed in the Parliament House premises.
