Nagpur: City witnessed high drama on Friday night, March 20, as MLA Pravin Datke stormed into the Tehsil police station along with hundreds of supporters. Datke accused police personnel of leaking sensitive information related to the Mahal riot case to civilians. The situation turned tense as the protest took place despite a curfew being imposed in the area.
Earlier, Datke had demanded strict action against the Tehsil police inspector, alleging that he was favoring the accused in the riot case. The matter was eventually resolved after the intervention of Nagpur Police Commissioner Dr. Ravinder Kumar Singal.
The Mahal riots broke out on March 17, leading to widespread stone pelting and arson in several parts of Nagpur. The violence erupted after rumors spread that a ‘chadar’ with holy inscriptions was burnt during a Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) protest. The rally was organized to demand the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
Following the violence, police launched a crackdown and arrested Fahim Khan Shamim Khan, the city president of the Minorities Democratic Party (MDP), along with his associates, under sedition charges.
