In an effort to combat rising pollution and temperatures, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is promoting eco-friendly construction by offering property tax discounts for certified green buildings. Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Dr. Abhijit Chaudhary announced these incentives while presenting the city’s budget on Friday.
Under the new policy, property owners who obtain a Platinum Green Building Certificate from the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) will receive a 20% discount on general property tax. Similarly, Gold-certified green buildings will be eligible for a 17.5% tax rebate, while Silver-certified buildings will receive a 15% discount.
Currently, NMC encourages sustainable construction by offering a 10% property tax rebate for buildings that incorporate rainwater harvesting, solar power, wastewater recycling, and organic waste composting. With the new policy, properties meeting these four criteria and achieving a green building certification will now qualify for additional tax relief.
This initiative aims to promote the use of environmentally friendly materials and energy-efficient designs in new constructions, ultimately helping to mitigate the impact of climate change. The NMC expects to generate around ₹350 crore in property tax revenue for the 2025-26 financial year.
With rising urbanization and increasing environmental concerns, the move is expected to encourage builders and homeowners to adopt sustainable practices, contributing to a greener and healthier Nagpur.
