The central government on Friday, March 28, announced that April 14, the birth anniversary of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, will now be observed as a national holiday.
The decision was announced by Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, who took to X (formerly Twitter) to share the news. He stated, “Now there will be a public holiday on the birth anniversary of our Baba Saheb Pujya Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar ji, the architect of the Constitution, who established a new era of equality in society.” He further credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for making the decision in line with the sentiments of the nation.
Nationwide Holiday for Central Government Offices
As per the official notification, all central government offices, including industrial institutions across India, will remain closed on Monday, April 14. All ministries and departments have been directed to inform the concerned authorities about this declaration.
Dr. B.R. Ambedkar: Architect of the Indian Constitution
Born on April 14, 1891, in Mhow, Madhya Pradesh, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar was a pioneering leader in the fight against social discrimination. He dedicated his life to advocating for the rights of marginalized communities, particularly the Dalits.
As the chief architect of the Indian Constitution, Ambedkar played a crucial role in shaping modern India. He was also the nation’s first Law and Justice Minister, an economist, a scholar, and the first Indian from an underprivileged background to earn a doctorate. A polyglot fluent in nine languages, his contributions continue to impact India’s legal, educational, and social systems.
Ambedkar passed away on December 6, 1956, and was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor. His death anniversary, observed as Mahaparinirvan Diwas, is a day of remembrance for his invaluable efforts toward social justice and equality.
