58 Booked, Including 41 Juveniles, for Sharing Objectionable Content on Social Media
Nagpur: In a concerning rise of social media misuse, 41 minors are among 58 individuals booked by Zone V police in Nagpur for circulating objectionable, obscene, and fear-inducing reels on platforms like Instagram and Facebook. The action comes as part of Operation Garuddrishti (Eagle Eye), a special initiative launched in March to monitor and act against the spread of inappropriate content online.
Led by Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Niketan Kadam, the operation is supported by the cyber cell to identify offenders involved in creating or sharing such content in a bid to gain attention, followers, or online fame. The offences have been registered under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COPTA) and the Arms Act.
Of the 58 individuals booked, 41 were found to be juveniles. In such cases, police have been counseling the parents and issuing formal warnings. “If a minor is found uploading objectionable content, their parents are called in and educated about the legal consequences. If the individual is above 18, legal action is taken based on the nature of the content, and a written assurance is obtained from them,” DCP Kadam said.
He also appealed to the public to report any content that is obscene, threatening, or inappropriate. “We urge citizens to immediately inform the nearest police station if they come across any such videos. Strict action will follow,” he added.
Mental health experts have expressed concern over the increasing desire among teenagers to gain validation through social media. Child psychiatrist Dr. Neha Bhave explained, “The youth today are heavily influenced by likes, shares, and comments. In their quest to go viral, many are posting bold or aggressive content without understanding the repercussions. Emotional instability during adolescence often makes them more vulnerable to such behaviour.”
The police have reiterated their commitment to continue monitoring social media platforms and take stern action to curb this trend, while urging parents to stay involved in their children’s online activities.
