In response to the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed 26 lives and left several others injured—including one resident from Nagpur—the city police have intensified vigilance to prevent the spread of hate speech and misinformation online.
The Nagpur Cyber Police have initiated a special monitoring campaign targeting social media platforms where provocative content related to the Pahalgam attack is being shared. So far, two youths from Madhya Pradesh and one from Jharkhand have been apprehended for posting inflammatory remarks about the attack, which targeted tourists in the Anantnag district.
Given the city’s past experiences with communal unrest sparked by social media content, the police have taken a firm stance. Under the direction of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Lohit Matani, dedicated cyber teams have been deployed to track and respond to digital content that could incite tension.
“Special instructions have been issued to our cyber personnel to monitor and take action against posts that spread rumors, fake news, or communal hatred in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack,” said DCP Matani. “We have strengthened our surveillance teams to ensure swift action against anyone attempting to disrupt peace through digital platforms.”
DCP Matani also appealed to citizens to refrain from sharing objectionable content in WhatsApp groups or on social media. “Even a single post can spark unrest. We urge people to be responsible and alert,” he added.
With the rise in online misinformation, Nagpur Police are urging community members to support peacekeeping efforts and report any suspicious activity on social platforms.
