In the narrow bylanes of Ekatma Nagar, Jaitala, celebration filled a humble kavelu-roofed home on Monday. Nirmal Mate, son of a daily wage labourer, scored an impressive 79.6% in the Class 12 Science stream, bringing pride not only to his family but to his entire neighbourhood.
A student of Ambedkar College, Untkhana Road — a partner institution of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) for meritorious students — Nirmal’s success is a powerful story of determination against all odds.
“I want to pursue Artificial Intelligence Engineering and build something that improves lives, especially for people like my parents,” says Nirmal, his voice filled with hope.
His father, Kailash Mate, works on daily-wage construction sites. His mother, Nilu Mate, overcome with emotion, recalled how Nirmal studied using borrowed books and notes, as they couldn’t afford a smartphone.
Nirmal’s sister, Komal, a nursing student, proudly calls him “the genius of our house,” recalling how he would study under the dim light of a borrowed table lamp.
Every day, Nirmal cycled 8 km to college, undeterred by weather or traffic. His consistent academic excellence came despite extreme financial hardship.
Support from the NMC-Ambedkar College partnership, including free classes and labs, helped bridge the gap. Now, as India talks about future tech, one boy from a modest home is already aiming to be part of that transformation.
Nirmal’s journey is not just about marks — it’s about the rise of a dream built on grit and gratitude.
